Triggered

Thing Two picked up the TV/Roku zappers and told me he was going to watch a Netflix documentary about the Challenger disaster. Would that be a problem for me?

"No," I replied. "Shit happens."

I found, as the minutes passed (even though I wasn't fully engaged, I was still in the room and listening, sort of), that while the background information was interesting, I had no interest in watching the explosion again. I had seen it live in '86, while nursing my firstborn in our Frankfurt Germany apartment, watching the event on AFN (Armed Forces Network).

When the launch happened again in this documentary, I didn't watch. But I listened, and wept for 30 minutes. And find myself weeping still while typing this.

  2. 22 years on, I still can't watch videos of the 9/11 planes; memories are still too visceral. I didn't know anyone there but have the same reaction I did then when I watched it on TV. Hugs to you, C. -Janet
