I finished a Thing

The Star of Bethlehem got finished in short order. After discovering (and removing some of) the existing quilting, I did a simple 8-point star design (with white thread) in the four corner squares . . .

Not very easy to see, but all the other non-flash shots that showed the quilting were too blurry to keep.

. . . some point-to-point lines in the triangles . . .

. . . a quick SitD with a variegated gold in the thin border, and an easy, large stipple in the outer border with tan thread.

The binding came from some tan/burgundy ticking-like fabric from the "Please take and use!" bin. The quilting, hanging sleeve, and binding was all accomplished in the course of one day. Such a nice feeling of accomplishment!

I've been living with the raw results while wondering to what extent I'm willing to go if these edges don't settle down soon.

I describe the results as "raw" because I haven't washed and dried this yet. That might do wondrous things to the edges. If not, I'll think about undoing and tightening up the binding. But until it's (not quite literally) been through the wringer, I'm not going to fret about its appearance just yet.

When I first un-/dis-covered this wallhanging, I was so taken with the nearly-done product that I skimmed over the rest of the POUT drawer. When I went back for a closer look, I found another complete star, a star with half the parts sewn on and the other half cut out and ready, the borders and backings to finish the stars into wall-hangings, and all the scraps remaining from the strip-piecing method of this star's construction.

Camera angle. That's much closer to a square block on the design wall than this image would make it appear!

I really want to dive in and complete the final two wall-hangings so I can put them in the Done column and have them on hand for gifts (for whom? Who knows!) Knowing how quickly they can come together (keeping in mind, Present Self, that the star had been quilted already by your Past Self), I'm sorely tempted to drop everything and do these next.

Then again, I have a week to get Mom's January banner underway and--dare I hope?--completed. The fireworks blocks are done (Happy New Year!), so that leaves something about her birthday, and a third thing that is celebrated in January that might catch my fancy.

I think I know the temporary fate of the remains of that POUT drawer. The strip scraps, however, have already been ironed and are waiting to be folded into the Scrap User's System.

  1. Some things just need to be left to mature so you are no longer invested in that original plan that wasn't working for some reason. The other option is to pass them on as they are, not appropriate here but useful if you find something in the "what was I thinking?" category. I'm pretty sure I've dealt with my 1990s wips, I have a box of HSTs as leaders and enders that mum had tucked away for twenty years. It's been interesting to see fabrics that I thought were long gone even from the scrap box.
