Organic eggs

From free range chickens? Not exactly.
From a yard (I think) of speckled black fabric (on which these first egg blocks are laid)(ha!), I cut several 1-5/8" and 1-1/4" strips. I then eyeball-sewed them onto the top and bottom edges, respectively, of some of the 3"x4" rectangles of the scraps I had saved that looked like egg shells, deliberately not measuring carefully--very "organic" in their construction.

Then I went into my stash and found a wonderful green/blue-dyed fabric that reflected the range of colors of the eggs our Araucanas laid. I also cut up a hunk of tan muslin created in a class in dyeing fabric. It had turned out too medium for my tastes and had languished in my stash for years (decades?), but it's perfect to represent brown egg shells! (Did you know that brown eggs are more prevalent than white eggs? Why, then, are they priced higher, as if they were rarer?)

Fifty-five egg blocks were constructed. There's just enough of the black to make one more egg block, if needed. The original plan has them arranged thusly:
I'm thinking now: not so much.
